Group O red cells and group AB plasma are both “universal donor” types. Although 45 percent of blood donors will be group O, only nine percent will be group O Rh(D) Negative. Similarly, only three to four percent of donors are group AB. The relative rarity of these universal donor components makes it vitally important to conserve the community supply by supporting each patient with his/her ABO type.
