Blood type, that is. Blood typing is only one test, but arguably the most important test performed hundreds of times every day by PSBC’s Donor Testing Services Laboratory. If an incorrect blood type is determined for a blood donation and the unit is transfused into a patient with an incompatible type, a serious and potentially fatal transfusion reaction can occur. We go to extraordinary lengths to ensure that the correct blood type is determined for each donation, and is accurately labeled before release to our hospital customers.
Testing for TTP
Thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP) is a disorder of blood cells and proteins that facilitate clotting. It is characterized by tangles of proteins and platelets that can block the microcirculation in organs and, if untreated, can result in blockage of the blood flow, ischemia and organ failure. Patients with TTP often present with symptoms that are difficult to differentiate from other causes: fatigue, nausea, vomiting. If unrecognized and untreated, TTP can be fatal. Continue reading
Northwest Tissue Joins LifeNet Health
Northwest Tissue Services (NWTS) has joined LifeNet Health (LNH). The new organization — LifeNet Health Northwest — is making new capital investments in the Renton facilities to expand the range of technologies and products offered, including a number of innovative, patented processes that make it possible for more patients to be helped by the gifts provided by donors/donor families.
Donor Testing Services to Become Part of CTS in 2013
On April 30, Puget Sound Blood Center (PSBC) and Creative Testing Solutions (CTS) announced an agreement in principle that will result in PSBC’s Donor Testing Services operations in Renton becoming part of CTS by early 2013. In return, PSBC will take an equity position in CTS, and will be represented on its Board of Directors. In becoming part of CTS, the Renton facility will benefit from being part of a large, specialized testing organization with strong purchasing power backed up by testing expertise, technologies and research.
Changes in PSBC’s Organization
Changes have been implemented at Puget Sound Blood Center (PSBC) to streamline the senior leadership team. Moving forward, there’s a sharpened focus on effectively implementing business strategies, fully delivering on customer expectations, maintaining full regulatory compliance and actively pursuing continuous quality improvement.
